In the Summer of 2009 I received a Small Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG) for a proposal to research and design new vertical gardening strategies. Vertical gardening is a growing trend in urban areas where there is little space for gardens. However many of the existing systems are overly expensive and too difficult for most people to assemble. I decided to apply my knowledge of digital fabrication to develop a modular system of components that stack into a self-supporting wall without the need for any adhesives or connection devices. The system is designed so that excess water could be recycled throughout the wall until it reaches the bottom, where it can then be collected for reuse or properly drained. Patents are currently pending for the sysem and I am hoping to make this product widely available to consumers.
