As part of the Occupancy Studio in the fall of 2009 students were to design a ‘Food Center’ utilizing the masonry shell of a vacant supermarket. The program of my proposal included market space, a culinary school, community kitchen/dining spaces, and a restaurant. The roof of the existing shell was replaced in order to channel light and water into the building while allowing for growth of produce above. All water that fell onto the site would be collected and reused for growing food to support the market and culinary school. A subterranean open space allows the market to function at all times of the year. The placement of the entrances and exterior market are essential in bringing people through the building and around the site.
