The '2011 Dawntown Miami' design competition called for a floating performance space adjacent to Miami Marine Stadium, which is an abandoned grandstand that was originally built to view boat races. Our project began with the idea that the boating culture in Miami is one in which the roles of viewer and performer overlap one another - people go out on their boats to be seen and to see others. The proposal reflects this culture by providing a network of platforms, accessible by boat, that allow the audience to behave as both performers and viewers during events. To address the existing structure, the formal language of the stage, platforms, and boats derive their geometries from the original grandstand.
